Re: Request for an Environmental Impact Assessment of Proposed Developments
As a resident who lives in the immediate vicinity of the University of Calgary (U of C) campus, I believe that my family and I will be directly and adversely affect by the proposed development of the U of C’s West Campus, as well several other very significant developments in this area. This letter is to request, that you order an environmental impact assessment of these proposed developments.
I believe that my family and I will be directly and adversely affected due to health, safety, environmental and socio-economic issues that have not been adequately evaluated, addressed or otherwise mitigated. The public information sessions to date have been used to inform and convince people to accept the proposed development plans rather than truly consulting with the public. The development schedule provided by the U of C does not permit any assessment of potential impacts or true dialog concerning community issues.
There are a number of large-scale developments in the immediate vicinity of our community that are being built or proposed for construction with no attempt to assess the effects of these developments on our communities or their residents. The University of Calgary is currently constructing several new facilities on the existing main campus and, on the West Campus, is proposing to construct the Calgary Children’s Hospital, a 50 megawatt electrical generator, new research facilities and student residences. The U of C is also proposing to expand the Medical Research Centre, expand the Athletic Park and construct a 185 room Conference Centre. In addition, a new Colonel Belcher Hospital is currently under construction, the Foothills Hospital is proposing to build new facilities, a new commercial laboratory is being built in the University Research Park and a shopping centre, Market Mall, is expanding by 20%. All of these developments are occurring within two kilometers of my house yet there has been no assessment of the air emissions, noise, waste water, safety, public health and public nuisance issues associated with these proposals.
In order to ensure that the assessment is thorough, that mitigation measures are adequate and that the considerations of affected party are truly incorporated into the U of C’s development plans I am requesting that a full environmental impact assessment, including a cumulative effects assessment, be conducted prior to any development in this area.
Thank you for considering my request.
