RE: THE NEW CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

Mr. Roman Cooney
Calgary Regional Health Authority

Dear Mr Cooney;

As a resident of University Heights, I am writing to tell you that, in my view, the West Campus is not the right place for the new Children’s Hospital, and the Children’s Hospital is not an appropriate development for the West Campus.

University Heights is surrounded by institutions already. The Foothills Hospital is expanding. The University of Calgary is expanding. Our little neighbourhood does not need the embarrassment of riches of another hospital. We don’t need the traffic, the noise, the power plant emissions, or the interchange across 16th Avenue.

Nor does it make sense to concentrate so many resources in one small area of the city. Other places in Calgary would welcome a new hospital. Residents of Mayland Heights and Albert Park in the NE would be delighted to have more medical resources close at hand, and so would the doctors who practice in the NE. Other places in Calgary have better, more direct road access already. Lincoln Park is just off Crowchild Trail, and not too far from the present ACH. Fire Park is not only close to Deerfoot Trail, Memorial Drive and Barlow Trail, it’s also close to an LRT stop.

Eighty-five percent of the University Heights residents who filled out the local Community Input Form are opposed to putting the new hospital next door to us. More than 100 people in UH took time to fill out a survey form. That’s half as many as CRHA collected from the whole city of Calgary and one quarter as many as your entire public sample.

People here feel very strongly on this issue, and will do everything we can to oppose it. Please avoid a confrontation, and urge the CRHA Board to reconsider the Site Selection Committee’s recommendation.

Yours truly,
